The Concept Time is not constant. It travels differently based on your position and speed. In some parts of the universe, a day can last millions of years.

The Story In 1905, Einstein’s theory that time “bends” depending on where you are stunned the world. Yet, the ancient Vishnu Purana contains a story that reads like a script for the movie Interstellar. It tells of King Kakudmi, who traveled to a higher realm to meet the Creator. He stayed for what felt like only 20 minutes of music. When he returned to Earth, he found that millions of years had passed, his kingdom was gone, and his descendants were forgotten. It was a vivid, analogical description of “Time Dilation”—the understanding that time is not a flat line, but a river that flows at different speeds across the universe.

Related Innovations According to ancient scriptures, time is relativistic, with distinct realms (Lokas) running on independent clocks. The Yoga Vasistha investigated how the mind perceives time differently in dreams than in reality.

Fun Fact This story is almost identical to the plot of the film Interstellar.

The Modern Legacy Time dilation exists, and GPS satellites must reset their clocks every day to account for it, or your maps will be off by kilometres.
